Assist Overview of Economic Development in Tooele
|
|
Tooele is a Premier community to
live, work, and do business.
Tooele City Redevelopment Agency (Agency) encompasses
the Downtown Area (regional map) and
includes the areas generally known as the Utah Industrial Depot
and the Tooele Commercial District (Project Area map).
The Agency was initiated in 1984 with the principle objective of establishing the project areas as the hub of the community in symbolic, functional, and economic terms. The Agency has made significant strides towards reaching this objective. (Overview of the Agency's process.)
Manufacturing: During the Agency's early years, economic conditions provided the opportunity for significant manufacturing development. The Agency capitalized on this through aiding in the renewal of construction . Road and infrastructure improvements largely funded by the Agency made this retired military facility attractive for other manufacturing development including Detroit Diesel, Freightliner, EG&G Defense Materials and Carlisle SynTec. There is currently over 2.5 million square feet of warehousing and manufacturing space in southwest Tooele.
Mixed-Use: The Agency has supported development of mixed-use projects that combine retail, restaurant, office, and entertainment uses in the Main Street Downtown Area. By including a combination of uses, these projects create an active street frontage and a more urban building form in the core of the older downtown area.
Residential Development: Integration of housing into the mix of uses in the downtown area will become an important component of the Agency's redevelopment strategy. Downtown housing enlivens overall activity as residents frequent local shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Infrastructure: The Agency has made significant investments in utilities, streets, and parking. Utility improvements have consisted of storm drain and utility repairs, upgrades and relocations. Road improvements include interstate highway on-ramp and off-ramp upgrades and the development of arterial streets. The Agency has funds to upgrade public downtown parking facilities, landscaping, street improvements and building restoration.
Improved Appearance: Enhancing the overall appearance of the downtown has been an integral component of this effort. Renovation of several of the Downtown Plazas, utility undergrounding, landscaping, downtown streetscape and median improvements, facade improvements, and tree lights in and around these areas will raise the aesthetic standard throughout the Downtown area. Historic renovations of older buildings in the potential Broadway RDA will also be an important part of the City’s redevelopment efforts. Historic renovations will include the Broadway Apartments.
