This program was selected by Communities That Care to address a rise in “low commitment to school”. Piloted locally in 2005, Lions-Quest has the full support of Tooele County School District and has been required curriculum in all 6th grade Tooele City Classrooms since 2006. Thanks to the cooperation of Tooele City Police Department, a 15-lesson Unit of Lion’s Quest is facilitated each year by a trained police officer. Through engaging activities and discussion, students learn respect for law enforcement; facts about tobacco, alcohol and other drug use; and important skill sets on how to resist peer pressure and stand up for themselves.

With the cooperation of Tooele City Police Department Lions-Quest students get to bond with law enforcement officers as they learn the consequences of choices that will make about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. ~Officers Mike Terry and Detective Brad Young pose with Thank-You gifts from students for facilitating Lions Quest in their classrooms for the 2009-2010 school year. |
“LIONS –QUEST teaches my students so much more than just how to resist tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Most programs that I am aware of focus on resistance to these substances. However, students in this program learn goal setting, anger and stress management, listening skills, inside pressure vs. outside pressure, turning pits to peaks, self-confidence, how to ASK questions, and friendship skills. This program allows my students to bond with each other and with me. It allows them the opportunity to learn to trust each other and share with each other. It is another means for me to be able to develop the kind and caring classroom that I endeavor to establish each year. “I love Lions Quest!” ~ Kristen Crossley, 6th grade teacher at Copper Canyon Elementary |
